Structural Bodywork

 What is structural bodywork?

Kinetic Myofascial Integration Massage
Structural Bodywork focuses on the connective tissue, or fascia, of the body, which surrounds muscles, blood vessels, organs, and nerves. Injury, stress, repetitive movements, and aging can cause fascia to lose its elasticity. Tightened fascia pulls our muscles and skeleton out of proper alignment, causing pain, discomfort, and fatigue.

One particularly effective form of Structural Bodywork is Structural Integration (SI). SI is delivered in a structured series of sessions to restore postural balance, ease of movement, and a feeling of being more at home in your body.

There are several forms of SI, based on the work of Ida Rolf, who developed her work in the mid-twentieth century. Rolf was a bio-chemist who was influenced by osteopathy and hatha yoga. Her work has been nick-named ‘Rolfing’. We offer Kinetic Myofascial Integration (KMI), developed by Thomas Myers.

How is Structural Integration different from other types of myofascial bodywork?

SI is undertaken as a discrete ‘project’ of 12 sessions. SI sessions take up to one and half hours each. Most people aim to complete the series in 3-4 months.

The 12 sessions are divided into three sections:

Sessions 1-4: Aligning the superficial tissue on front, back and sides of the body.

Sessions 5-8: Aligning the deep (core) structures of the body.

Sessions 8-12: Integrating the body and introducing movement awareness.

KMI is a partnership between practitioner and client. As the work is delivered, we will discover new parts of your body. The work can be challenging at times but can also result in some euphoria as old pain patterns are released and new freedom of movement is found.

Contact the studio to discuss if KMI is for you.
